Rogue
X-Men
Kotobukiya Shunya Yamashita Bishoujo
Based on the August 2009 released Kotobukiya figurine and accompanying artwork, this original design was specially created by illustrator Shunya Yamashita and sculpted by Koei Matsumoto. The statue stands 7 3/5 inches tall (1/8 scale) and was a limited edition piece constructed from high-quality pvc and abs plastics - released in two variants: with a cropped bomber jacket or Gambit's long trench coat. This figure was the first in their series of Marvel Comics super heroines presented in the Japanese Bishoujo (pretty girl) style.
From the pages of the X-Men comes the powerful and gorgeous mutant ROGUE, the first in an exciting new series... The sexy Rogue is dressed in her iconic green and yellow skin-tight X-Men costume, which highlights her voluptuous curves – as well as keeping her covered to avoid absorbing the powers and memories of others who come into contact with her skin. She stands atop a stylish, minimalist white base, one leg perched seductively to accent her shapely leg. The mutant’s long hair floats behind her as she raises one hand to her beautiful Bishoujo-styled face.
As a huge fan of Rogue, cosplaying her was a long time coming. On top of being, arguably, one of the most powerful mutants on the X-Men team - with her powers to absorb and copy other powers and personalities - she is easy to identify with. Her personal, emotional conflict resounds with people who have, at some time in life, felt alienated from society or their loved ones. She is a physical manifestation of that feeling and it's fascinating to see her journey. In addition, in spite of being raised by mutant terrorists and misguided to a terrible place, she still manages to be a good person. She’s a bit hot-headed, but the idea of taking a life sickens her and she’ll always fight to protect the innocent. I settled on this variant after much thought and a successful time commissioning Peggy Carter - my first non-Disney commission.
I had to commission this costume twice. I had originally wanted it to troll the May 23, 2014 release of X-Men: Days of Future Past (commissioning the costume in October of 2013), but it did not arrive in time. When it finally did arrive, the costume didn't fit, was very poorly constructed, and completely see-through. I moved on to God Save the Queen Fashions to remake my suit and belt, both of which still ended up having to be locally modified for fit issues. Commissioning something that is supposed to be skin tight is incredibly difficult when you are not there for fittings and alterations.
The base jacket was a "New Look Slightly Cropped Motorcycle Faux Leather Jacket (Small in Tan)" from Amazon.com, which underwent quite a transformation, including a paint job, new signature collar, hacking off most of the sleeves, and X-Men patches that I purchased in the dealer room at Dragon*Con 2014. The original gloves were "White Kid Leather Gloves" in Size 7 from Italy (vintage from Etsy). These gloves underwent 3 separate paint jobs, the first and final ones by hand from yours truly. The final wig is a 28" custom commissioned lace front from Wig Glamour.
Terrible cracks and peeling occurred in the paint on the jacket, boots, and gloves during my hour of wear for a finished product charity photo shoot on October 1, 2015. I repainted them by hand - using a lighter, less cheeto-ish color on the gloves and boots - before sending them off, and they came out beautifully so new owner CyberGirl Cosplay won't have to photoshop the color like I did :P
From start to finish, about 2 years of planning, fabrication, re-fabrication, alterations, and fixes went into this costume. It honestly seemed like a higher power didn't want me to cosplay Rogue, but I'm so happy to have completed an amazing photo shoot and sent it to it's new home with CyberGirl Cosplay, who loves Rogue and the costume. Seeing these photos and her big smile in the costume, it was all worth it <3
